Project Description

Hypertension: from GWAS to functional genomics-based precision medicine

Mattson and Colleagues, Nat Rev Nephol. 2017

Functional genomics in disease-relevant tissues is essential for advancing precision medicine for common and complex diseases. A) Hypertension and other common and complex cardiovascular and renal diseases are heavily influenced by environmental factors, which might be difficult to identify and quantify. Thus precision medicine might be limited by stochasticity resulting from uncertain genetic significance and environmental influences at the level of individual patients or patient subgroups. B) Advances in precision medicine could benefit substantially from analysis of the products of interactions between the genome and the environment in tissues relevant to the disease, using readouts such as epigenetic changes, changes in the profile of RNA, proteins, and small molecules, and organ systems physiology.
